Sinopsis Buku :
Acute otitis media is the most common childhood illness and is often caused by a bacterial infection. AOM is common in children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years and is rare after 8 years of age. One in four children will experience at least one episode of AOM by the age of 10. Other data suggest that by age three, approximately 50% to 85% of children will experience at least one episode of AOM.
Common symptoms include pain in the ear, which may cause the baby or child to grip or pull on the affected ear. They may also roll from side to side, lose their appetite, and lack interest in feeding. Additional symptoms that may occur include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. If not treated properly, Otitis Media can cause hearing loss in children.
Treatment goals for children with AOM include reducing pain, improving hearing and communication, facilitating drainage where possible, preventing complications or recurrence or avoiding re-infection, providing education to families in caring for children, and providing support to children and families so they can increase knowledge about disease conditions and their management. Furthermore, providing emotional support to children and families and encouraging follow-up evaluations of hearing to detect hearing loss
